Mortality rates remain in the range of 1127% . The most common infecting micro-organisms are now the staphylococci (44%) although streptococci (31%) and particularly the oral streptococci (21%) are still major causative agents. Many different oral streptococci have been isolated from IE cases, the most common being Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus gordonii, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus anginosus group and mutans streptococci .

Vaccination with FimA from Streptococcus parasanguis protects rats from endocarditis caused by other viridans streptococci.

The FimA protein of Streptococcus parasanguis is a virulence factor in the rat model of endocarditis, and immunization with FimA protects rats against homologous bacterial challenge. Because FimA-like proteins are widespread among the oral streptococci, the leading cause of native valve endocarditis, we evaluated the ability of this vaccinogen to protect rats when challenged by other streptococ...

Virulence Factors Associated with Enterococcus Faecalis Infective Endocarditis: A Mini Review

INTRODUCTION The enterococci are accountable for up to 20% of all cases of infective endocarditis, with Enterococcus faecalis being the primary causative isolate. Infective endocarditis is a life-threatening infection of the endocardium that results in the formation of vegetations. Based on a literature review, this paper provides an overview of the virulence factors associated with E. faecalis...

Ecto-5′-Nucleotidase: A Candidate Virulence Factor in Streptococcus sanguinis Experimental Endocarditis

Streptococcus sanguinis is the most common cause of infective endocarditis (IE). Since the molecular basis of virulence of this oral commensal bacterium remains unclear, we searched the genome of S. sanguinis for previously unidentified virulence factors. We identified a cell surface ecto-5'-nucleotidase (Nt5e), as a candidate virulence factor. By colorimetric phosphate assay, we showed that S....

Circulating immune complexes in subacute infective endocarditis and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.

Two out of five patients with subacute infective endocarditis and two patients with post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis had large amounts of soluble circulating immune complexes in their sera. The three others with endocarditis had less severe disease and minimal evidence of circulating immune complexes. Low serum complement was also found in two of the cases.

Penicillin G-resistant viridans group streptococcal endocarditis and interpretation of the American Heart Association's Guidelines for the Treatment of Infective Endocarditis.

We report a case of endocarditis due to a penicillin-"resistant" Streptococcus parasanguinis, discuss interpretations of the American Heart Association's guidelines for the treatment of viridans group streptococcal infection, and comment on therapy for infective endocarditis due to penicillin-resistant viridans group streptococci.
